 By popular demand, instructions for modifying your ingame buddylist.
Battlefield Vietnam has a useful feature called the BuddyList, which allows you to add people in
and have their 3D-Map icons and ingame messages appear in a different color than the default red
or blue. To use this feature, simply follow these directions:
First, you need to open your buddy list. This is a text file located at:
"C:Program Files/EA Games/Battlefield Vietnam/Mods/BfVietnam/settings/Profiles/*YourProfileName*"
where "*YourProfileName*" is whatever your active Battlefield Vietnam profile happens to
be called. In this folder you should see a file called "BuddyList.con". Open this file using
notepad.exe, or any other plain text editor. If you do not see this file, create it with Notepad.exe.
This is where you add your friend's usernames that you want to appear in a different color.
The format is:
game.addPlayerToBuddyListByName "PlayerName" R G B
Where "R G B" are the color values you want that name to appear in. For example:
game.addPlayerToBuddyListByName "-=CCC=-eggs" 0.0 255.0 0.0
This would make the user -=CCC=-eggs appear in-game with a bright green 3D-map icon. You can add as many
people to your buddylist as you want, just remember that you must add them exactly as their ingame name
appears. If eggs changed his name to -=CCC=- eggs, with a space after the "-=CCC=-", he would
not be recognized by the BuddyList.con file until you manually added him as "-=CCC=- eggs" .
Some common color values you might want to use are:
0.0 255.0 0.0 Bright Green
255.0 0.0 255.0 Bright Purple
255.0 255.0 0.0 Bright Yellow
255.0 150.0 0.0 Orange
DO NOT add people with Blue or Red colors. In a TWL screenshot, this can look like you're cheating, so
stay away from those two colors.
An example list might look something like this:
game.addPlayerToBuddyListByName "-=CCC=-eggs" 0.0 255.0 0.0
game.addPlayerToBuddyListByName "-=CCC=-Centurion" 0.0 255.0 0.0
game.addPlayerToBuddyListByName "-=CCC=-MATCS-18" 0.0 255.0 0.0
game.addPlayerToBuddyListByName "-=CCC=-Zapp Brannigan " 0.0 255.0 0.0
game.addPlayerToBuddyListByName "-=CCC=-sweaty bROW " 0.0 255.0 0.0
etc...
When you are finished, make sure you save your list, then right click on the file, Properties, and set it to READ ONLY.
Otherwise, BF:V will overwrite it the next time you play, and you just wasted all your time. You MUST then
copy the file to:
My Documents/Battlefield Vietnam/mods/BFVIETNAM/Settings/Profiles/*YourCurrentProfile*
Why? I'm not entirely sure. It seems EA creates a backup copy of your buddylist there, and if you set the one
under Program Files to READ ONLY, the game goes to the one under My Documents and reads it instead. I heard
something about that being for public game cafe settings, but it seems kind of silly to me.
Anyway, if you follow these instructions, the next time you launch the game, everyone in the buddylist should
show up as the colors you set.

(User Info | Send a Message) | | Well I think your inability to understand why folks would restrict writing to files in the Program Files folder is silly. :P In practice, because of PB, users must have full admin and access to the bfv folder, but without PB one can be a limited user and still have customized settings by storing them in a "personal" folder. The structure of it is sort of silly, but it appears to be more of a hack to allow such use more than anything else -- And it has to support mods, so keeping the structure the same makes it easier on all. Cept us, cos the buddylist is still broke. :/ |
